About Me

Kristin L. Melton, MS, LCPC

For the past 15 years, I have been dedicated to assisting families with mental health concerns, growing family strengths, and promoting resiliency. My experiences include being a certified teacher and school counselor in Illinois, a clinical psychotherapist for Illinois Baptist Children's Home & Family Services, a social marketing professional for Egyptian Health Department, and a certified Olweus Bullying Prevention Trainer.

I love doing advocacy work, but emotional education for youth and adults is also a continuing passion of mine. I enjoy assisting schools and other organizations in learning to recognize and stop peer emotional and/or physical abuse. It is rewarding and proactive in my children's mental health goals. In 2007 I became the original creator and co-author of a healthy relationships curriculum for the Illinois Baptist Children's Home & Family Services for a program known as SMART Education. It provides education to teens about personal relationship choices and behaviors. As the primary SMART instructor, the curriculum touched the lives of over 1500 teens in Southeastern Illinois. I was able to further the exposure of the curriculum state-wide when I was crowned Mrs Illinois International 2009, which brought eventual national exposure when I placed 1st Runner-up to Mrs. International 2009.

As Mrs. Midwest International 2012, I promoted the Children's Mental Health Network as their Spokesperson and I love the great information that Scott Bryant-Comstock, CEO & President, provides to the Network devotees each week. He covers a wide variety of children's mental health news that you shouldn't miss if you are interested in the latest breaking stories and discoveries.

During my year as Mrs. Midwest 2012, and now as Mrs. Midwest 2013, I have loved being a part of the National Federation of Families for Children's Mental Health. First as an advocate, then as an Executive Board Member, and now also as their National Spokesperson. Since 1989, the Federation has been providing support and advocacy for children and families with mental health needs and I'm proud to help continue to grow their mission.

I enjoy the quiet life of the rural countryside in Southeastern Illinois with my husband of 16 years and our two  absolutely fantastic daughters! We are blessed to be surrounded by the Melton family and love our small town community.
